Overview

Adastra is seeking a hands-on Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions in a cloud-based environment. This role will focus on developing robust data pipelines, transforming and optimizing large datasets, and leveraging GCP BigQuery to enable reliable analytics and reporting across the organization. The ideal candidate has strong SQL and Python expertise, experience working with production-scale data systems, and the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable and reliable data pipelines
  • Write, optimize, and troubleshoot complex SQL queries for large datasets
  • Build and manage datasets within GCP BigQuery, including query optimization and performance tuning
  • Develop data transformation workflows using Python
  • Ensure data quality, integrity, and consistency across systems
  • Support data modeling efforts to enable analytics and downstream consumption
  • Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions
  • Document data processes, workflows, and system architecture
  • Contribute to best practices in data engineering, governance, and performance optimization

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field 
  • 5+ years of hands-on Data Engineering experience 
  • Strong hands-on experience with SQL (complex joins, aggregations, performance tuning)
  • Strong proficiency in Python for data processing, ETL development, and automation
  • Experience working within Google Cloud Platform (GCP), specifically BigQuery
  • Experience building and maintaining production-grade data pipelines
  • Solid understanding of data modeling and large-scale data processing
  • Experience working with structured and semi-structured datasets
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally

NICE TO HAVE

  • Experience with orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow or similar)
  • Experience with dbt or modern data transformation frameworks
  • Familiarity with CI/CD practices for data engineering
  • Experience working in agile environments
  • Exposure to data governance and data quality frameworks
  • Experience supporting machine learning or advanced analytics workloads
